American Eagle gold coins have been minted since 1986 in four gold content variants: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz. The higher weight of these coins is due to the lower purity of the gold, which means that the coins contain 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper and 3% silver. This improves the resistance of the coin to abrasion. The coins are made exclusively of gold mined in the USA. The obverse of the coin bears the traditional motif of the Statue of Liberty (Lady Liberty), who holds a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. At her feet is the Capitol building on the left, and the year of issue on the right. The ring is bordered by 50 stars representing the 50 states of the USA, and the text "LIBERTY" is written in the upper part. A small author's mark is placed below the year of issue. The reverse of the coin depicts a bald eagle, the national symbol of the USA. The Type 2 design has been minted since mid-2021 and depicts a bald eagle in profile in great detail. The space at the top contains the national mottos "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM". The coin features the name of the state "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", the face value and the weight of the gold. The individual parts of the text are separated by stars. The design's author's initials "JN" and medalist Renata Gordon's "R" are included.
